American Pie Band Camp - Thanksgiving, A Great American Holiday But Why Turkey?

I as an American living in Warsaw, Poland am often asked "Why a turkey?".

This question when put to the average American would be answered in the form that it was what was eaten by the pilgrims during the first thanksgiving which became a tradition afterward and this a nice story. The idea of continuing a tradition started by those whose suffering in the new world gave way to them being thankful for their first good harvest which they celebrated with a huge turkey meal is sentimental but is it true? Did the pilgrims really eat turkey during the first thanksgiving meal? This is a question that many historians have come to ask if the pilgrims in fact ate the bird we today know and refer to as a turkey because the pilgrims called every form of wild fowl a turkey even those that were not what we today call a turkey.

It is strange for many and perhaps unacceptable that the pilgrims might not have eaten turkey as it has become such a symbol of this holiday but there is a possibility they might not have. Lobster, deer which perhaps nobody would ever associate with Thanksgiving were surely eaten but there is one thing that we can almost eliminate from what could have been on the menu and that is pumpkin pie as the pilgrims more then likely had run out of flour by then.

Of course it is not really a matter of tremendous significance if the pilgrims who are very often referred to as our forefathers ate what today is known and accepted as turkey but what is some might say is the fact that they were giving thanks to God for the blessings they had received during the year. This again based on what we know today can also be disputed, not that there ever was a feast but that its intension was to show gratitude toward God. Yes, it is true the pilgrims were deeply religious in a way that did not allow them to wear any colors apart from black also holding believes that dancing, drinking and music were irreligious but this reason is precisely why some argue that theirs was not really a feast of thanks. The logic for this disbelieve that questions lies in the fact that these were deeply religious people not despite it. In those days thanking God was done in a completely different manner then it is today as giving thanks to God in those days specially by deeply religious people was done in the form of praying and fasting and not in the form of huge feasts. In the opinion of several historians the feast of the pilgrims was in fact a harvest celebration which was a very common thing at the time and not a day for giving thanks to anybody contrary to the story most Americans are told in school. One reason I can see for this change in the story is perhaps the United States government felt that a day of thanks would be more eagerly celebrated then a "harvest day" especially by those whose livelihood was not dependent on agriculture.

Contrary to what some may think the Thanksgiving feast was not repeated by the pilgrims the following year as the harvest was not as abundant and it was not before two years passed after the first feast that it was repeated. Strangely enough many historians have cause to believe that this second feast was in fact the first real "Thanksgiving Day Dinner" fore it was then that the pilgrims had a day to give thanks for the rain that brought to end the long draught which they felt their prayers to God have been responsible for.

Another Thanksgiving day fact that took me by surprise when I first heard it was that the pilgrims only held this feast twice which goes in stark contrast to what I had believed that this celebration was repeated by them year after year. The reality was that not till much later during the Lincoln administration did "Thanksgiving" became recognized as an official holiday as it was Lincoln who took time out from the "Civil War" to make it such. To many however at the time in congress the sufferance of a what in fact could be called a handful of Pilgrims as they only numbered 100 (not all members of the "Separatist Church of England" and most of whom died less then 5 years after reaching the new world) did not substantiate having a national holiday. As for me, I can see where there was certain logic in this however when saying this I do not wish it understood that I am against this holiday as I celebrate it every year despite not having been in the States in over 13 years.

There is another factor which I also find odd in the telling of the history surrounding Thanksgiving or at least in the way it is told in American schools and that being that it is never mentioned that the Pilgrims left England but originally it was not to go to the new world but to the Netherlands. Holland where they stayed for many a year but eventually left finding the Dutch way of life to be "ungodly" as well as the fact that some of their children were speaking Dutch instead of English as unbearable. I find it funny on a lighter side of this that the clothes we associate with the pilgrims meaning the long black hats the men wore which in my opinion resemble a witch's hat were really Dutch as was the rest of their garments and this perhaps is the reason that men in this attire can be found on boxes of "Dutch Masters Cigars".

The question of why the turkey is however not the only one I hear in Poland year after year from those whom I mention Thanksgiving to as very often I am asked to share my knowledge on why it is held on the 4th Thursday of November as opposed to having a fixed date like Christmas? This question I can not answer with certainty but I will try to use my imagination as to what might have lead the United States government to set the day as such.

In the first place they chose a Thursday meaning that they more then like always wanted it to be on a weekday unlike Christmas which some years can fall on a Sunday. But some insist why the 4 Thursday of November not another day for instance the 3 Wednesday of October?

This again with reason as an ally I can retort that those who chose this day were probably looking for a day that would help mark the begging of the Christmas shopping season but not one that would be so close to it that it would be competing with it. This 4th Thursday if one thinks about it is ideal as it can fall anywhere between the 28th of November at the latest or the 22nd at the earliest.

Another reason I can speculate why Thursday was chosen as opposed to shall we say Friday or Wednesday, is that Thanksgiving being on Thursday makes it possible for stores to close on Thursday for Thanksgiving and then use the following Friday to get themselves ready for what would be the first Saturday of the holiday shopping season. The reason this happens is that the day after Thanksgiving though not an official bank Holiday is taken as such at least as far as schools and department stores are concerned. This in my opinion being a good technique to follow given that Saturday is the most popular shopping day and these stores want to take advantage of it and be ready for the first Saturday of the Christmas shopping season.

Despite these discrepancies in the tale which to my personal way of seeing things are interesting but do not change nor diminish what Thanksgiving has become, which is an American holiday which can be celebrated by anybody regardless of nationality or religion. The reason I can even say any religion is because this day or what this day has been transformed in to is a day on which we Americans give thanks for what we have but strangely enough it is no longer connected with giving thanks to anybody in particular or even God.

Another factor connected with Thanksgiving that makes it a great secular holiday for anybody is the fact that it is not really connected to patriotism as it does not celebrate the wining of a battle or the gaining of independence. This leaving it open to be celebrated by anybody regardless of nationality who would like to eat a turkey and give thanks for he or she has that he or she considers worth being thankful for.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!

American Pie Band Camp - Be Happy and Healthy! Take a Vacation!

Did you take a vacation this year or skip it because of high gas prices? Americans have always been good at putting off vacations so this year they have a built in excuse. If you passed on a 2008 vacation so far and want to be happier and healthier, now is the time to take a vacation!

According to an E poll a third of all Americans do not take all their vacation days. The Bureau of Labor Statics says that one quarter of all Americans get no paid vacation! That was a surprise to me although as a business owner in a solo practice I get no paid vacation either.

A recent New York Times article by Alina Tugend entitled "Vacations Are Good For You, Medically Speaking" makes the point that recent studies show that vacations are necessary for good health. The article sites two different health studies (one with females and the other males) that showed a high percentage of coronary problems occur for those who do not vacation regularly.

A vacation gives you time to unwind. It allows you to de-stress and relax. There is research evidence you sleep better during and after your vacation. I have always been amazed that the feeling of relaxed vacation calmness lasts for a few days when I return.

By the way for those who carry cell phones and Blackberries to check on work back at the office on their vacation, there have been studies to show that you are less likely to receive the benefits of vacation according to the NY Times article.

So if you didn't take your vacation yet, now is the time to do it. If you are the type to check in with the office, find a place where cell phones and Blackberries don't work so you can truly relax. (It can be hard to unhook from the cell phone/Blackberry addiction! but worth it.)

If you have young children, vacations with them can be exhausting. That is not the kind of vacation that relaxes! Young families need to take two vacations, one with the family and one for the parents alone.

As a Grandmother I am always delighted to be asked to baby sit while my daughter and son-in law go on vacation. I once went to Disney World with the whole family so they could have time with each other and I could watch the children. If you have this option, you get a rest and please your parents too.

For my vacation this year, I participated in the Berkshire Choral Festival. I enjoy vacations where I do something I don't get enough of during the year. For me that is singing. I spent a week learning and rehearsing "Carmina Burana" and then with a group of other singers we performed it on July 19th for an audience. Both the rehearsal and the performance were an absolutely exhilarating experience. I'm planning to do it again next year.

Whether you like adventurous vacations, learning vacations, traveling vacations or just sitting by the pool vacations, it is important to change your environment once or twice a year and just have some fun. (What is all that work for?) Where you go or what you do isn't as important as just enjoying yourself and letting go for a bit. If you haven't scheduled your vacation yet, do it today.

Take Action

1. Vacations don't have to be exotic. How many of us have gone abroad but never visited the interesting places tourists from other countries visit near our own home. Make a list of the places close by that you have always wanted to visit and plan your vacation around them.

2. Are you an email junkie even on vacation? Start to think about ways to cut down on checking even when you are not on vacation. It wastes time anyway. Make a list of things you can do to eliminate a lot of email while you are on vacation and implement your ideas before vacation.

American Pie Band Camp - The Brazilian Mastiff

The Fila Brasileiro (or Brazilian Mastiff) is a large working breed of dog developed in Brazil. The leg and spine joints of this breed of Mastiff demonstrate perfectly what made this dog such a great tracking dog. Interestingly, this Mastiff, at one point in the history of the breed and the country, was used to track and capture runaway slaves.

The Fila Brasileiro is believed to have been developed from a number of breeds, predominantly the Mastiff, the Bulldog, and the Bloodhound (the last contributing to breed's loose skin).

Not surprisingly, the ancestors of this dog included Bloodhounds, Mastiffs and Bulldogs of European origin. The result of this breeding is a dog that possesses the incredible scenting ability of the Bloodhound and the amazing fearless power of a mastiff. Like his cousins, the English Mastiff and others, he is a large dog. Their loose joints allowed them to change direction or stop on a dime in a fraction of a second.

The Brazilian Mastiff is by nature a ferocious guard dog, bred to actually distrust and dislike stranger. This combination made this dog suited to the defence of the cattle ranches of the Minas Gerais region.

The male Brazilian Mastiff is in the region of 30 inches tall and weigh between 160 and 230 pounds. Whereas the female weighs approximately 90 pounds, with a height that ranges between 24 to nearly 28 inches.

This breed of Mastiff can be prone to health problems, such as obesity, bone cancer, and hip dysphasia.

If the Brazilian Mastiff has won your heart and you are considering owning one. Then all I can say is beware. Because they are known for their self-assured, but fiery temperament and at times can be uncontrolable.

Brazilian Mastiffs are not suitable for city life or for busy households where non-family members come and go as they please. These dogs are very courageous and require firm training in order to prevent excessive aggression and to promote calm and obedient behaviour.

This breed of Mastiff can be extremely loyal and affectionate with family members and instinctively (and ferociously) protects his family from all strangers. They are reckoned to be one of the top ten guard dogs of all time.

They are a very intelligent animal and at times they give you the impression that they have a docile temperament. They have a tendency to bark very infrequently, but surprisngly they are aware of everything going on around them.

If you have decided to own a Brazilian Mastiff you can get more comprehensive information on The Brazilian Mastiff in our book, The Noble Mastiff - Everything You Need to Know About Buying, Raising and Caring for a Mastiff.

American Pie Band Camp - The English Mastiff

If a "top ten" list existed for guard dogs, the English Mastiff dog would definitely rank right up there in the top two or three. His appearance alone guarantees that you think twice about coming near him.

The English Mastiff is a powerfully built canine with a body that can only be described as "massive." He enjoys the distinction as being "the heaviest dog in the world." In fact the mastiff probably gets his name from the Anglo-Saxon word for powerful - "masty." The English Mastiff is descended from both the ancient breeds, the Alaunt as well as the Molosser and he is recognized as the oldest British breed of dog (and sometimes he acts as if he knows this!)

Not surprisingly this huge dog was used - as early as the sixth century BC - for various "fighting" purposes. He was indispensible in many of the blood sports that have become legendary, including bear-baiting, bull-baiting, lion-baiting (believe it or not!) as well as dog fighting.

The English Mastiff breed is an incredible intermingling of grandeur, dignity and courage. He is perhaps to those who don't fully understand the breed, the ultimate paradox of dogs. Loyal, calm, affectionate and loving toward his family, he is a first-class guardian as well, ferocious, tenacious and fearless when the need arises. As stunning evidence of this, an English Mastiff will instinctually position himself between his owner and an approaching stranger to protect the "family territory."

Should the approaching stranger not give the dog his due, the Mastiff may take swift, immediate defensive action. And now you see why, he could be ranked up there with the top ten guard dogs of all time!

For all his fierceness, the English Mastiff is incredibly gentle with children.

The English Mastiff is indeed an imposing figure of a canine. The average Mastiff stands at about 30 inches at the shoulder for males and only a little shorter - 27.5 inches - for females. A male English Mastiff can tip the scale between 160 and 230 pounds. The female is not far behind, though, weighing in between 140 and 190 pounds or more!

Loke most breeds of dog, the English Mastiff has its share of health issues. These include bloating and hip dysplasia. The breed is also prone to obesity. You can manage both the bloating and the weight by feeding your dog two or three small meals a day. As loved as this dog is, there are still plenty of english mastiff rescues.

The English Mastiff also possesses a higher incidence of bone cancer than some other breeds of dog. They are also one of the breeds that may be prone to developing kidney stones.

A healthy English Mastiff lives to be between nine and 11 years old. He demands a good diet as well as plenty of exercise - as you can well imagine. Sometimes you will have to coax him to exercise. Just like his human owner, he's prone to enjoying "the good life." You may find that he's quite comfortably lounging in the living room rather than running the track outside or walking through the park with you.

Don't forget to brush your English Mastiff daily. Dust, dead hair as well as other "things" tend to "hide" in his coat until you remove them. And while you might not be able to see them, after they've been on him a while, the accumulation - believe it or not - actually begins to smell. Another advantage to daily brushing involves skin problems. The chances of developing any concerns dealing with the Mastiff's skin are far less if you make it a habit to brush him regularly.

Instead of using a regular brush on the Mastiff, though, consider using a "dog-glove." This incredible device was developed expressly for short hair dogs like the Mastiff. Both you and he will find this enjoyable - and it'll be a great "bonding" experience for the two of you as well.

Your Mastiff not only has a huge body - but he has a heart to match. And he's more than willing to give it to you - for a lifetime.

American Pie Band Camp - AKC Registered Dog Breeds - What Is It All About

Many potential dog owners looking for a dog will be familiar with the acronym "AKC Dog Breed". It seems to pop up over and over again. For those in the know, they will realize that AKC stands for the American Kennel Club and is the registry for all purebred puppies in the United States of America.

This club holds obedience competitions and dog shows, maintains dog standards and registers puppies of AKC-recognized breeds. Simply put, this is the benchmark by which all dogs are judged against to be seen as purebreds. There are over 100 different dog breeds registered with the AKC.

You do, however, need documentation from both the puppies parents In order to register the puppy. Purebred litters are registered shortly after the puppies are born. The breeder will get registration forms to enter individual puppies into the AKC registration when the litter is 2 months old. New owners can decide to register their puppies by sending in applications to the AKC for a bona fide acknowledgment.

There are eight different types of AKC dog breeds, including the Hound Group, the Sporting Group, the Working Group, the Non-Working Group, the Toy Group and the Terrier Group. Each dog competes within their group and within its breed during competitions.

Dogs that have a natural affinity to chase other animals and work as superb hunters are placed in the Hound Group. Some can be fastidious and measured or hasty and eager like the Greyhound.

Moving on, the Sporting Group refers to hard-working dogs that are energetic. They need to expend their energy through exercise and can spend hours happily fetching and spotting objects for their masters. The Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel are dogs belonging to the Sporting Group.

The Working Group is breeds such as the Doberman Pinschers or Rottweilers. Their main priority is to safeguard their territory and family. They tend to be strong and full of spirit, with a innate desire to safeguard and keep watch.

There is also the Non-Working Group, which is a category for dogs that do not belong to the other groups. Everything from the Standard Poodle to the Boston Terrier belong to this group.

As the name hints, the Toy Group consists of dogs that are smaller in size, an example being the Miniature Pinscher.

Last but not least, Yorkies and Scottish Terriers, like other dogs that have the innate desire to hunt mice are categorized under the Terrier Group.

AKC has a category, the Miscellaneous Group for dogs which are in the process of getting accreditation in the registry. Although AKC is the most well-known club in USA, there are other clubs like the United Kennel Club, the American Canine Association, the Canine Kennel Club and the North American Purebred Dog Registry.

Owners can request that their dogs be accredited with the AKC and submit a formal request, allowing AKC to assess their application. For instance, Australian dogs are accredited in the Victorian Canine Association while Canadian dog owners need to register their dog under the Canadian Kennel Club.

American Pie Band Camp - Cancer - One in two men and one in three women will get it. What to do?

There is nothing that puts more fear in people than a diagnosis of Cancer. Statistically speaking, we now have one in two chances (male) or one in three chances (female) of getting cancer before the end of our life (American Cancer Society statistics for the year 2003). At the beginning of the 20th century, statistics gave us one in 500 chances of getting cancer.

All cancers considered, if you have a primary cancer (in one location only) the most optimistic statistics only give you 28% chances of recovery. If you have metastatic cancer (in more than one location) then your chances of recovery are 0.1% or in other words, one chance in one thousand to recover - (statistics from Dr Philip Binzel book "Alive and Well" published by American Media).

The news is bleak to say the least. However, as we will see later on, this need not be the case.

Ever since I can remember, I have read newspaper articles, heard claims on TV or radio, reporting new "wonder" cures on the war against cancer. Victory against this terrible disease was, according to these reports, just around the corner. Why is it then that so many people are still dying from this disease? Are the 600 UK cancer charities (The largest UK charities being Imperial Cancer Research Fund, Cancer Research Campaign and Institute of Cancer Research) lying to us?

The "American Cancer Society" is the richest charity in the world. All debts paid, it would still have half a billion dollars in the bank!

Linus Pauling, the winner of two Nobel prizes, seemed to think so when he said: "Everyone should know that most cancer research is largely a fraud and that the major cancer research organisations are derelict in their duties to the people who support them."

What is Cancer?

Modern researchers have for many years been exploring the virus connection at a cost of billions of dollars and pounds. The pitiful result is that "no cancer that was incurable 25 years ago is curable today and that, for the most common cancers that kills 90% of patients today chemotherapy is no better than snake oil" (The Cancer Handbook. What Doctors don't tell you publication. By Lynne Taggart).

When you are diagnosed with cancer, what the doctor is really saying is that you have one or several tumours in your body and that at least one of the tumours contains some cancer cells. They see the tumours as the enemy that has to be fought and destroyed and all their efforts are directed against eradicating the tumours.

What is a tumour though? A tumour is only a symptom; it shows that something has gone wrong in your body and that your immune system is no longer available to fight it. Many researchers claim that we all have tumours in our body and that several times in our life we get cancer. However, we do not all die from cancer. The reason is that our body's defence mechanism spring into action when a tumour is formed and gets rid of it or at least neutralises it. If cancer cells are beginning to form, these are killed off by our immune system and all is back to normal.

However if for some reason our immune system is severely deficient and we are unable to fight off the formation of the cancerous cells, then disease spreads.

What needs to be done to fight the tumour is not so much to remove it (surgery), burn it (radiation) or poison it (chemotherapy) as all these will weaken our immune system (damaging both our liver and kidneys to a point where it is difficult for our body to fight off any health problem). But to find out why the tumour formed in the first place and remove the cause.

Fighting it according to Dr Binzel is no good, our body now has in its memory the recipe to form tumours and uses the negative ingredients we feed it with to form new tumours and it will rarely stop doing so unless we remove the cause. The lack of positive ingredients (Vitamins, minerals and essential enzymes) to fight off the tumour is just as important.

Let me compare this reasoning with the simple example of a tooth infection. There is no point in taking painkillers to fix the tooth. I grant you that they will probably relieve the pain but I profess that they will not cure the tooth. What needs to be done is to get rid of the infection with antibiotics or have the tooth removed.

What do cancer cells feed on?

Several factors such as diet, negative emotions/ stress and environmental toxins are usually responsible for the development of cancer. Dietary speaking, cancer cells need food to survive. Dr Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize for scientifically proving that cancer feed from the fermentation of sugar:

"in cancer cells [the feeding] is replaced by an energy-yielding reaction of the lowest living forms; namely, a fermentation of glucose" (quoted in prevention - May 1968).

According to Macrobiotic medicine theory, cancer cells also feed on animal protein (all types of meat, especially chicken but also very much on dairy, eggs etc..)

Detecting cancer

Currently, surgeons often perform a biopsy when cancer is suspected. A biopsy is a way of extracting a quantity of matter from a tumour and test it to see if it is cancerous. The problem with this method is that if the tumour is cancerous and the tumour is punctured, there is a definite risk that the cancerous liquid will spread to surrounding cells and spread the cancer around the body (Roger Delin - medical analyst - Philippines.

Breast cancer is often diagnosed using a mammogram. The main manufacturer of mammographic equipment is a company called "Smarlight Mammographics". They state: "We expected error rates to be around 30%, but the wide range of results (10%-90%) was an eye-opener." Amazing admission from the largest manufacturer of what is considered as the ultimate test to detect breast cancer. Unbelievable !

It is interesting to learn that autopsies have shown that many undetected cancers were present in the body of people who died from other causes. This makes a mockery of medical statistics and confirms that in fact a substantial number of cancers are never detected and do not obligatorily cause death.

A Swedish study has revealed that 15% of major cancers were not revealed before death and around half were of a type normally considered fatal (ref: wddty).

Modern approach and progress on cancer

The modern approach to treat cancer is surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones and immunotherapy. The percentage of oncologists (cancer doctors) who would not participate in chemotherapy trials is an alarming 75% (due to its toxicity). (John Robbins – "The source of true healing")

The progresses made were, it appears more due to the temporary reduction in tumour size rather than in an increase in the life expectancy for the patient. No mentions were made however of the increased suffering caused by the side effects of the drugs taken.

2- Statistics

Statistics from the American Cancer Society

* 556,500 cancer deaths were expected in 2003 in the United States alone (more than 1,500 a day)

* About 1,334,100 new cancers were expected in the USA for 2003 (excluding skin cancers)

* 17,000,000 Americans developed cancer between 1990 and 2002

* Despite billions of $ and £ being spent on research, there was only a 1.4% decrease in cancer deaths between 1989 and 1995. Very poor considering more cancers were detected (and detected earlier) using sophisticated methods.

*Estimates for 2003 was that 1,000,000 people would get skin cancer

*The cost of cancer for year 2000 was $180.2 billion (USA alone). $60 billion for direct medical costs, 15 billion for indirect morbidity costs (cost of lost productivity due to illness) and $105.2 billion for indirect mortality costs (cost of lost productivity due to premature death).

* About 211,300 new breast cancers diagnosis were expected in 2003

3- What to do to protect yourself or help beat cancer?

The American Cancer Society stated on their web site for the year 2003 statistics that three quarter of all cancers are due to poor Diet and Environmental causes.

I personally would also include "Negative Emotions Stress" as being a major cause of cancer and increase this figure to: "Over 90% of all cancers are due to poor diet, negative emotions and environmental factors" (my own opinion based on years observations).

To protect yourself from cancer or help yourself if you have cancer, you must:

1- Change your diet

2- Work on your emotions

3- Get rid of your (home) environmental toxins

4- Replenish your energy with natural therapies or remedies

Americans in Paris will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston through Sept. 24 and at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art from Oct. 17 through Jan. 28, 2007.

This exhibition represents an extraordinary collaboration between these two great museums to shape a truly unique international exhibition. It also provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to these two great American cities to experience some of our nation's finest paintings in the context of an innovative and beautiful show.

After the Civil War, thousands of American artists traveled to Paris to study, visit exhibitions and show their own work. Americans in Paris reveals the importance of the pieces that these Americans produced and exhibited in the French capital from 1860 to 1900, including famous paintings such as Winslow Homer's "A Summer Night" (1890) and John Singer Sargent's provocative "Madame X" (1883-1884).

Also on display are the dynamic experiments of Mary Cassatt-the only American invited to show her work with the Impressionists-such as "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair" (1878) and "Woman with a Pearl Necklace in a Loge" (1879).

"Bank of America is proud to sponsor this extraordinary exhibition of timeless American masterpieces and to invite all in the U.S. to enjoy it," said Anne M. Finucane, Chief Marketing Officer and Northeast President, Bank of America. "This exhibition represents our nation's artistic heritage, and gives us a window into the lives and ambitions of some of the most influential American artists during a period when they created many of this country's most admired paintings."

Americans in Paris, 1860-1900 looks at why Paris functioned as a magnet for American artists, what they found there, how they responded to it and what they retained from the experience on their return to the United States. It is a must-see for anyone living in or traveling to Boston this summer or New York City in the fall.
